Hacking can be a serious problem when you are utilizing a web hosting account.  Granted, paid web hosting tends to be a little more secure than free web hosting, but either account types can get hacked.  And when such things happen, hackers can compromise both the webmaster’s site and their good name.  This is especially the case if the hacked site is used for phising and other illegal activities.

What can webmasters do to avoid getting their web hosting accounts hacked?  The best solution is to upload straight .html files, (since php or cgi-bin can be more vulnerable).  Next, webmasters need to ensure they have a solid user ID and password.  Both need to be based on phrases or terms they made up, not information that can be guessed.  They should also not opt to get default user ID or passwords from the web hosting company directly, since they tend to use derivatives from the domain name.

Additionally, when you sign up for your web hosting account, make sure that your personal information is not made available to the public.  When you don’t do this, hackers can try to acquire your passwords or user IDs through fraudulent customer service requests.
