Now, when it comes to free domain names, you may be thinking why sacrifice being able to get a .com or a .net to save $1.00 to $37?  And for many webmasters who are operating one or two sites, such a concern is valid. However, what if you are operating hundreds of small sites? Your domain name bill could slowly add up. In these instances you may want to consider using a free domain name, even if you can’t get .com or .net as extensions.

For example, Dot.tk offers free domain names that have the extension .tk. Yeah, it’s not a .com, but it’s not as bad as the type of domain you would get if you got a third-level URL, (usually given by free hosting companies), or .co.nr, (an extension available through the company Free Domain). You can also make this domain name worthwhile if you can come up with a domain name hack. These are domain names that spell out a word, phrase or represent an acronym. You can do this for English or other languages, if you decide to market your site to foreign countries.

Granted, even with a .tk domain name, you may still lose traffic to people that will associate your site with a .com. But people that are really interested in what you have to offer will enter in the .tk, even though it’s unusual as an extension. The main key is making sure that your advertisement is written well enough to catch people’s attention.
