Web hosting service is a category of Internet hosting service that permits people and businesses to offer their own websites and make them accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosting is done by companies that supply space on a server they own for use by their customers as well as providing Internet connectivity, usually in a data center. Web hosting can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called collocation.

Web hosting uptime refers to the proportion of time the host is available via the internet. Numerous providers state that they aim for a 99.9% uptime, but there might be server restarts and planned (or unplanned) repairs in any web hosting situation. A familiar assertion from the popular web hosting providers is ‘99% or 99.9% server uptime’ but this frequently refers only to a server being powered on and doesn’t account for network downtime. Real downtime can potentially be bigger than the percentage assured by the provider. Many providers secure uptime, and accessibility, into their own Service Level Agreement, or SLA. SLAs may or may not contain refunds or reduced costs if performance targets are not met. Internet web hosting services can also run Web servers.

Free web hosting service is a cost-free, advertisement-supported web hosting, and is often restricted when contrasted to paid web hosting. Shared web hosting service is when one’s website is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. In general, all domains could split a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. A shared website may be hosted with a reseller.

Reseller web hosting permits customers to become web hosts themselves. Resellers can function, for individual domains, under any mixture of these listed types of web hosting, depending on who they are allied with as a provider. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size and they may have their own virtual dedicated web hosting server to a collocated server.
