There are many types of web hosting services from free to dedicated hosting and there are resources available meant to enlighten readers with more web hosting terminology. Yet another type of dedicated web hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for dedicated web hosting plans. The user has full administrative access to the box, which means the consumer is accountable for the security and preservation of his own committed box.
Users may also be interested in Managed web hosting service. In this service the user gets his or her own Web server but is not permitted complete run over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); nevertheless, they are permitted to handle their data via FTP or other remote management tools. The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The web hosting server is leased to the client.
A popular term you may have heard about is Colocation web hosting service. Much like the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting business supplies material space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of the web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may provide little to no support directly for their client’s machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server. In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes.
Not unlike collocation, clustered web hosting is having several servers hosting the same content for healthier resource utilization. And finally a new web hosting term creating buzz is Grid hosting. This type of web hosting is relatively new –a form of distributed web hosting is when a server cluster acts like a grid and is composed of multiple nodes.

Hi,
I am working for a web hosting guide which guides people to choose the most suitable host. I like Adam Maywald’s article about Types of Web Hosing as it is very informative for visitors. I would like to advertise on your site, our link on your site could be useful for your visitors too. I am sure we can agree on a suitable compensation.
Hope to have a positive reply soon.
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Joanna
